Prepare for the Actual Format
Read the invitation for presentation length, documents, interview arrangements and any task. University interview processes vary; do not assume a standard set of questions. Revisit the project or proposal and identify the choices you would be comfortable explaining, including the methods and practical limitations.
Practise a Research Conversation
Prepare a brief explanation of the question, why it matters, the approach and your relevant experience. Then ask a friend to interrupt with “why that method?” or “what would you do if that evidence were unavailable?” Practise thinking aloud clearly. A thoughtful account of uncertainty is more useful than an unsupported confident answer.
Make Space for Your Questions
Use the discussion to understand training, supervision, project scope and the working environment. Write three questions that affect your decision, rather than asking for information already in the notice. After practice, record one answer that became clearer and one assumption you need to investigate. For an online interview, check audio, connection and any presentation file beforehand.
Your Next-Step Checklist
- Confirm the format, timing and any required presentation.
- Practise explaining a method choice and a limitation.
- Prepare questions about the research and training environment.
