Define the Problem
Explain what is known, what remains unclear and why the gap matters. A topic such as “AI in education” is a field of interest, rather than a research question. Narrow the setting, population or process that you want to examine.
Connect the Question and Method
UCL’s proposal guidance identifies background, rationale, literature and methodology as important elements. Explain why your approach could answer your question, what evidence you would need and which practical limits affect the plan. Include the required references.
Test the Scope
Linkuble exercise: turn “AI in education” into “How do teachers assess the reliability of AI-generated feedback in one subject?” Then ask what data you could realistically access, what permissions might be needed and which part of the question needs refining. This example is a planning exercise, not a validated research gap.
Your Next-Step Checklist
- Find the department’s proposal instructions and word limit.
- Write the question and intended contribution in plain language.
- Check access to evidence, feasibility and ethical requirements.
