UK RESEARCH DISCOVERY

Explore Psychology PhDs in the UK.

Psychology doctoral research can involve very different questions, populations and methods. Compare the research activity rather than relying on a broad subject label. A project using experiments, interviews, longitudinal data or computational models needs different preparation and access. Start with a question you want to investigate and examine whether the group can support a credible method.

Current Opportunities

University College London
Gatsby Computational Neuroscience and Machine Learning PhD
PhDStudentshipFunded studentshipApplications Open

Study theoretical neuroscience or machine learning through a four-year programme combining intensive first-year training with doctoral research. Students develop expertise in their principal field while engaging with the complementary discipline.

University College London
Gatsby–Sainsbury Wellcome Centre Joint Neuroscience PhD
PhDStudentshipFunded studentshipApplications Open

Combine experimental and theoretical neuroscience through a four-year joint programme. Co-supervised rotation projects help students develop a doctoral question linking laboratory data with modelling and analysis.

University of Bath

Test the Method and Access

Ask how participants would be recruited, whether a suitable dataset already exists and what permissions the proposed work would need. Consider measurement quality, missing data and whether the design can answer the question you have posed. These are planning questions, not a substitute for ethics review or a supervisor’s methodological assessment. Clarify training in the methods you have not yet used.

Choose a Group With Relevant Support

Compare the supervisor’s research with the project, and ask about specialist equipment, statistical support, participant access and collaborations. Identify whether you need experimental, qualitative or computational training. Bath lists several funding routes for Psychology, while Cardiff describes different types of funded opportunities. Neither general programme page guarantees that your own project will receive an award; check the specific competition and its deadlines.

How do I narrow a psychology topic?

As a planning exercise, specify the population, process and outcome you want to understand. Then ask what evidence would distinguish competing explanations. An interest such as mental health is a starting area, not a complete research question. Read recent work from the group before deciding which uncertainty you want to address.

Should I apply with my own proposal?

Read the route instructions. Cardiff separates advertised funded-project applications, which do not require a research proposal, from self-funded project applications that do. Its document requirements differ by route. Bath asks for a proposal for applicants bringing their own idea and gives additional instructions for ESRC funding.

Does a Psychology PhD qualify me for clinical practice?

Do not assume a research doctorate establishes a professional practice qualification. This page concerns research opportunities. If your goal includes clinical or another regulated professional role, check that role’s specific training and registration route with the relevant official professional source before choosing a programme.
