UK RESEARCH DISCOVERY

Funded PhD Opportunities in the UK.

A funded PhD is an opportunity to undertake doctoral research with financial support, but the award needs as much attention as the project. Compare the research question, supervision and training alongside the actual costs covered. A university may advertise a fully funded project, a funding competition or a programme with separate scholarships. Those routes require different decisions.

Current Opportunities

Anglia Ruskin University
CAM-DTP Social Science Doctoral Funding at ARU
PhDFunding ProgrammeCompetitive fundingApplications Open

Apply for competitive social-science doctoral funding at ARU through student-led or advertised-project routes. The award supports home-rate fees and a stipend. International applicants need evidence of an additional scholarship for the fee gap and immigration costs.

University of Bristol
Practice-Oriented Artificial Intelligence PhD
PhDResearch ProgrammeCompetitive fundingApplications Open

Train in applied AI through a doctoral programme that asks applicants to demonstrate technical judgement in a case study. A nominated supervisor and a conventional PhD proposal are not required at the initial application stage.

University of Bristol
Technology Enhanced Chemical Synthesis PhD
PhDStudentshipFunded studentshipApplications Open

Join a four-year doctoral training programme in synthetic chemistry. Applications are assessed in published rounds, with funding available to eligible UK and international candidates.

University of Bristol
GW4+ Environmental Science Doctoral Training
PhDStudentshipFunded studentshipApplications Open

Apply for environmental-science doctoral training across climate risk, Earth hazards, environmental solutions and biodiversity. The partnership advertises 42-month studentships, with a limited allocation for international applicants.

University College London
Gatsby Computational Neuroscience and Machine Learning PhD
PhDStudentshipFunded studentshipApplications Open

Study theoretical neuroscience or machine learning through a four-year programme combining intensive first-year training with doctoral research. Students develop expertise in their principal field while engaging with the complementary discipline.

University College London
Gatsby–Sainsbury Wellcome Centre Joint Neuroscience PhD
PhDStudentshipFunded studentshipApplications Open

Combine experimental and theoretical neuroscience through a four-year joint programme. Co-supervised rotation projects help students develop a doctoral question linking laboratory data with modelling and analysis.

University of Southampton
Soil Bioturbation, Water Flow and Gas Transport PhD
PhDAdvertised ProjectFunded studentshipApplications Open

Model how biological activity changes soil properties, water flow and gas transport. This advertised project connects mathematical scaling with environmental and physical processes in soil.

Loughborough University
Spectrally Pure Topological Microcombs PhD
PhDAdvertised ProjectFunded studentshipApplications Open

Develop low-noise optical microcombs for precise timing in a project involving National Physical Laboratory placements. The published funding package is four years; part-time terms and October-start treatment need confirmation.

University of Surrey
West Nilotic Morphosyntax PhD
PhDAdvertised ProjectFunded studentshipApplications Open

Investigate grammatical evolution in West Nilotic languages, with opportunities for collaboration and fieldwork.

Read the Award Before Shortlisting

Treat this as a planning exercise. Identify whether fees are covered at Home or overseas rates, whether maintenance is a stipend, how long payments continue and whether research costs receive separate support. Ask what happens if the project takes longer than the funded period. UKRI’s guidance describes minimum support for its own studentships; it does not establish the terms of every doctoral award.

Separate Selection From Eligibility

An applicant can meet the academic entry requirements without qualifying for a particular award. Check the project notice for nationality, residency, fee status and study-mode restrictions. Then check how the university assesses these conditions. If a page only says UK only, record the restriction and request clarification rather than translating it into a rule the notice does not state.

Does funded mean every cost is covered?

No. Read the itemised award. UKRI contributes towards tuition at Home fee rates, and international students may face a difference. Its studentship support does not pay student visa or immigration health surcharge costs. Other funders and universities can have different terms; a headline cannot establish the final budget.

Can I apply directly to UKRI?

Students apply to the provider offering the studentship, rather than directly to UKRI. Find the university or research organisation’s instructions and establish whether the academic application also enters the funding competition. Keep the two outcomes separate until you have both an admissions offer and confirmed funding.

How should I compare projects?

Use a short evidence table: question, methods, supervisor, training, funding duration and applicant restrictions. Include a column for unanswered questions. Two opportunities with similar stipends can differ substantially in research access, support and costs you must cover yourself.

Plan Your Application

Our research guide explains the decisions and links to official university and government guidance. Applications and funding decisions are handled by the offering institution.

Your Next-Step Checklist

  • Find the official project and award instructions, including both deadlines.
  • Record covered costs, excluded costs and funding duration separately.
  • Ask the provider to resolve any eligibility or overseas-fee uncertainty before relying on the award.
