Apply for competitive social-science doctoral funding at ARU through student-led or advertised-project routes. The award supports home-rate fees and a stipend. International applicants need evidence of an additional scholarship for the fee gap and immigration costs.
Can You Apply for a UK PhD Without a Master’s?.
Some UK doctoral routes consider applicants without a separate Master’s, while others require one. The useful question is whether your current qualifications and research experience meet the specific programme’s requirements. Read the wording carefully: required, preferred and exceptionally considered mean different things. Compare your evidence with that wording before assuming another qualification is necessary.

Train in applied AI through a doctoral programme that asks applicants to demonstrate technical judgement in a case study. A nominated supervisor and a conventional PhD proposal are not required at the initial application stage.
Join a four-year doctoral training programme in synthetic chemistry. Applications are assessed in published rounds, with funding available to eligible UK and international candidates.
Apply for environmental-science doctoral training across climate risk, Earth hazards, environmental solutions and biodiversity. The partnership advertises 42-month studentships, with a limited allocation for international applicants.
Pursue doctoral research in civil engineering, with groups working on earthquake and geotechnical engineering, water and environment, and systems and safety. A general course application does not secure a funded project.
Investigate a mechanical-engineering question through groups spanning dynamics, solid mechanics, design and ultrasonic testing. The programme supports independent research, with funding considered through separate studentships or external sponsorship.
Develop research across literature and culture with expertise aligned to your proposed material and methods. The department encourages prospective applicants to contact relevant supervisors before submitting a proposal.
Develop a geography research project with written supervisory support before formal application. The department welcomes applications throughout the year; competitive funding follows a separate timetable.
Study theoretical neuroscience or machine learning through a four-year programme combining intensive first-year training with doctoral research. Students develop expertise in their principal field while engaging with the complementary discipline.
Combine experimental and theoretical neuroscience through a four-year joint programme. Co-supervised rotation projects help students develop a doctoral question linking laboratory data with modelling and analysis.
Pursue research in literature, creative writing or English language. Applicants develop a proposal, identify potential supervisors and prepare supporting documents for a year-round research degree route.
Develop research in English literature across historical periods and themes including life writing, gender, literature and science, and the history of the book. Applications need a proposal in the university’s specified form.
Conduct doctoral research in psychology, including social, cognitive, health, clinical and environmental areas. Projects may collect new data, analyse existing evidence or undertake a systematic review.
Explore doctoral research within Cardiff’s psychology research environment. The school distinguishes specific funded projects from other application routes, so the documents needed depend on the opportunity you choose.
Model how biological activity changes soil properties, water flow and gas transport. This advertised project connects mathematical scaling with environmental and physical processes in soil.
Use computing to assess river barriers and prioritise changes that reconnect freshwater habitats.
Develop low-noise optical microcombs for precise timing in a project involving National Physical Laboratory placements. The published funding package is four years; part-time terms and October-start treatment need confirmation.
Use simulation and data science to improve digital building models and reduce differences between predicted and measured performance.
Investigate grammatical evolution in West Nilotic languages, with opportunities for collaboration and fieldwork.
Develop PFAS-free coatings incorporating 2D materials to protect porous building materials against moisture and mould.
Carry out laboratory-based materials research supported by academics across science, engineering and medicine.
Seek competitive international doctoral funding through School nomination and a university selection panel.
Compete for arts and humanities doctoral support with training through the Landscape South hub.
Choose among six defined cancer-biology projects spanning chromatin, ageing and immunity, pancreatic cancer, cell engineering, kidney-cancer evolution and transcriptional regulation. Exact project requirements differ.
Challenge-led social-science doctoral study with structured research training and a funded research-in-practice placement; final duration may vary after a training-needs assessment.
An interdisciplinary four-year studentship joining two Loke Centre research groups to investigate placental biology, early development or maternal–fetal interactions.
Cross-disciplinary doctoral funding for research aligned with Durham's Transformative Humanities framework, with training and placement resources alongside the award.
Discovery-led arts and humanities doctoral awards with researcher development and engagement beyond the university, selected through the Queen's postgraduate application.
Arts and humanities doctoral scholarships combining an independent research project with a funded three-month placement and regional training.
Model fusion-reactor breeder blankets using neutronics, thermomechanical coupling and AI-assisted optimisation.
Use numerical and experimental techniques to develop ways to measure Earth's gravitational acceleration of antimatter.
Build an Evidence Map
Use this planning framework: list each entry condition beside the qualification or experience that may satisfy it. Mark uncertain equivalences and ask admissions for clarification. Separate academic grades from research skills, language requirements and supervisory fit. If exceptional consideration is possible, provide evidence for the exception rather than treating the exception as the normal route.
Choose the Next Step Deliberately
If your background lacks experience of sustained independent work, examine research Master’s projects and their assessment. If you already have strong research evidence, discuss the doctoral route with the department. Cambridge notes that most of its doctoral applicants have postgraduate experience, but individual subjects can have specific requirements. Always return to the course instructions that apply to your chosen intake.
Is a Master’s always compulsory?
No single entry rule applies to every UK PhD. Warwick’s Computer Science page states an undergraduate requirement and preferably a related MSc. Bristol Mechanical Engineering normally requires a Master’s merit, with exceptional consideration for applicants holding a first-class undergraduate degree. These are programme examples, not guarantees of admission.
What evidence can show research readiness?
Relevant examples might include a dissertation, substantial project, methods training or research employment. Explain your actual contribution, the decisions you made and what you learned from uncertainty. A list of techniques is less informative than a concrete example of how you used a method to investigate a question.
Should I take a research Master’s first?
Compare the missing skills with what a particular course would teach. A Master’s may offer useful preparation or meet a stated entry condition, but it is a further commitment of time and money. Ask whether the proposed training directly addresses the gaps in your doctoral application.

Your Next-Step Checklist
- Distinguish required qualifications from preferred preparation.
- Summarise one research project with your role, method and outcome.
- Ask admissions about equivalence or exceptional consideration before spending on another course.
