Start With the Entry Year and the Type of Help
Build a shortlist around the intended school year and entry point, not just the school name. A Year 7 application and a sixth-form application may use different forms and dates. Record whether the opportunity is a scholarship recognising ability, a means-tested bursary providing fee assistance, or a combination. Treat each school’s policy as the deciding source. If the website describes recognition, enrichment or a development grant, do not put an assumed fee reduction in your budget. Write down the financial benefit the provider actually confirms, and mark the rest as questions.
Find the Bursary Route Before Preparing Documents
Open the school or foundation’s official admissions page and follow its own bursary link. Some schools ask families to indicate financial assistance on the entrance application; others direct parents to a separate financial-assessment system. Check whether a registration fee is required and whether assistance with that fee can be discussed. Keep the provider’s contact details, application link and relevant policy together. An early enquiry can establish which route to use, but an unanswered email or expression of interest does not establish that an application has been submitted.
Keep Four Dates in Separate Columns
Use separate columns for school registration, scholarship application, bursary application and assessment. Add an internal preparation date before the earliest real cutoff so you have time to resolve missing information. Bristol Grammar’s school-linked bursary portal illustrates why this matters: the published Senior School bursary cutoff is 4 January 2027, whereas its specialist scholarship application cutoff is 20 November 2026 at noon. Neither date should be substituted for the other. A different entry point has different dates. Confirm your own route and retain submission acknowledgements.
Prepare Evidence Through the Provider’s Process
Means testing can assess family income and assets as well as other circumstances. Read the provider’s checklist rather than assuming a particular document will be enough. Keep requested evidence accurate and consistent, and ask the school how to explain a change in circumstances. If another organisation handles assessment, confirm that it is the service linked by the school. Financial records, identity documents and a child’s school reports belong in that designated process, not in Linkuble searches or a public enquiry. Linkuble does not assess your household finances or determine entitlement.
Compare the Fees Remaining After an Actual Offer
Once the school confirms an award, ask for a written breakdown of the fees covered and the amount your family must pay. A stated maximum percentage is not your personal award. Check boarding separately from tuition, then consider meals, transport, uniform, equipment, trips and any other charges the school identifies. Build your calculation from the actual offer and current fee schedule. Keep possible additional awards in a separate column until confirmed, and ask whether the awards can be combined. Do not assume that the highest advertised bursary makes every cost disappear.
Check Continuation Before Accepting
Ask how long the award lasts, whether there is an annual financial review, and what academic, conduct or attendance conditions apply. Royal High Bath explicitly states that its bursaries are subject to annual review. Different schools can use different arrangements. Keep the offer, policy and renewal dates accessible, and ask how changes in income or family circumstances should be reported. Decide with the full written terms available, including any deadline for accepting the school place and any financial commitment the provider asks you to make.
Does a Scholarship Guarantee a Bursary?
No. Scholarship recognition and means-tested fee assistance are separate decisions unless the provider explicitly combines them. Some schools link access to a bursary to a scholarship programme; others allow applicants without a scholarship to request financial help. Check the named school’s application rules rather than applying one school’s arrangement elsewhere.
Can We Apply After the Scholarship Deadline?
Only the provider can confirm whether a particular route remains available. There may be separate scholarship, bursary and admissions deadlines. If you are late or the dates conflict, contact the school promptly and obtain confirmation before relying on an extension. Do not assume that a later assessment date leaves the application open.
Your Next-Step Checklist
- Confirm school, entry year, year group and day/boarding route.
- Record admissions, scholarship, bursary and assessment dates separately.
- Use the provider’s document checklist and confidential submission system.
- Compare the actual award against tuition, boarding and additional costs.
- Read renewal, reassessment, acceptance and withdrawal conditions.
