Start with the actual offer
Separate an application, a possible award and an award confirmed in writing. Until the school has made its decision, keep the amount in your comparison as unconfirmed. Check the entry year, the pupil covered, the start date and the period of support. Ask the school which version of its fee schedule the offer uses.
Calculate the uncovered fee
For a planning example only, suppose a school's annual fee is £24,000 and its written award covers 75% of that same fee. The remaining fee would be £6,000 a year, before any excluded charges. Neither figure describes an actual school or an available award. Ask for the payment schedule: an affordable annual total can still create a difficult termly payment.
Build a separate list of extras
Ask about registration, deposits, meals, transport, uniform, equipment, trips, examination charges and optional activities. This is a list of questions, not a claim that every school charges every item separately. Mark each item included, payable or awaiting confirmation. Record when each payment is due and whether any upfront payment can be reduced or waived.
Is a 100% bursary completely free?
Full fee assistance does not establish that every associated expense is covered. Read the scope of the award and ask for written clarification about additional costs. ISC describes separate help with extras at schools; that does not promise such help to an individual family. Keep an unconfirmed extra-cost award out of your confirmed budget.
Ask about support beyond tuition
If the remaining expenses make a place unaffordable, ask the school about help with those specific costs. Explain the shortfall through the school's confidential process. Do not assume a scholarship, a bursary and a separate charitable award can all be combined. Record which body makes each decision and whether approval is still outstanding.
Plan for the next review
ISC explains that financial assessments are usually revisited annually. Ask when renewal evidence is required, how changes in circumstances affect the award and how future fee changes will be handled. Compare a confirmed first-year budget with a second planning scenario in which fees or support change; label that scenario as an assumption.
Should I add a possible scholarship to my budget?
Keep competitive or undecided support in a separate scenario. Your main affordability calculation should use only confirmed assistance and the charges it actually covers. If an award is later confirmed, update the calculation using its written terms and any rules about combining support.
Get answers before accepting
Send your questions to the school's admissions or finance team before the relevant acceptance deadline. Keep a copy of the offer, fee schedule and answers together. Use Linkuble to compare opportunities, then confirm the family's individual position with the school. Never put household financial documents into public comments or a general discovery profile.

- Calculate the uncovered fee using the same charging period.
