Build research skills in sensor design, sensing networks and data analysis, with applications in healthcare and sustainability. This standalone MRes combines science and engineering; progression to a PhD requires a separate application.
PhD Stipend or Postdoc Salary: Read the Offer Correctly.
A doctoral studentship and a postdoctoral job can both support research, but they are different offers. One funds postgraduate study; the other can be employment on a research project. Compare status, responsibilities, payment duration and costs before comparing headline annual amounts. The word funded does not explain those differences by itself.
Current Opportunities
Learn computational genomics and data-science methods, then use them in a research project. Although the qualification is an MRes, Cambridge classifies this course as taught. Progression to a PhD is not automatic.
Prepare for doctoral research in management through Cambridge Judge’s MRes/PhD route. Admission is highly selective. The School describes conditional scholarship support for admitted applicants who accept their offer within the stated period.
Explore photonic and electronic systems through taught modules and two individual research mini-projects. One project takes place at UCL. The programme balances teaching and research; check travel arrangements and costs before applying.
Develop an independent thesis on literature, culture or film within the department’s research areas. This route is designed for applicants who already know their intended research field and have experience of sustained independent writing.
Pursue a thesis in linguistics or language sciences, supported by research-methods training. The department’s work includes computational approaches, behavioural experiments and speech research. Applicants should discuss their topic with a potential supervisor before applying.
Study advanced economic theory and methods while beginning to develop a research direction. This MPhil includes substantial coursework and prepares students for doctoral applications; completing it does not guarantee admission to a PhD. Cambridge classifies this course as taught; included for doctoral research preparation.
Undertake a research thesis in Middle Eastern studies. The route combines a defined research topic with the language knowledge needed to work with relevant material, offering preparation for further independent scholarship.
Develop a research project with a psychiatry group whose work aligns with your interests. The project is shaped during application discussions, with training in conducting and communicating research in the department’s scientific environment.
Investigate cognition and brain function through experimental psychology, neuropsychology, computational modelling or neuroimaging. Projects can involve new experiments or analysis of existing datasets, with emphasis on research design and clear communication.
Build research skills through methods training, a proposal and a management research project. The programme combines structured study with preparation for independent investigation in business and management.
Develop biomedical research experience through a structured Master’s programme with specialist study and project work. Compare the available specialisms with your scientific background and intended research direction.
Develop an independent research project in English language or literature within a structured Master’s programme. The route can support doctoral preparation or a sustained project connected to professional interests.
Undertake a supervised biomedical research project. The MSc research route lasts one year full-time or two part-time.
Develop an independent materials research project over one full-time year or two part-time years.
Choose among six defined cancer-biology projects spanning chromatin, ageing and immunity, pancreatic cancer, cell engineering, kidney-cancer evolution and transcriptional regulation. Exact project requirements differ.
An interdisciplinary four-year studentship joining two Loke Centre research groups to investigate placental biology, early development or maternal–fetal interactions.
Business and management social-science doctoral proposals considered through the SGSSS open competition.
Compare several Computing Science PhD funding schemes for October 2027 entry. Graduate School awards include fees and stipend, while other schemes offer Home-rate fees, partial international discounts or part-time teaching remuneration. These are different packages; a common award amount is not guaranteed.
ESRC doctoral training across multiple social-science pathways, with a three-month Research in Practice placement.
Competitive institutional AHRC funding for original arts and humanities projects, including interdisciplinary and collaborative research.
SGSAH-linked arts and humanities studentships with cohort training, placements and knowledge exchange.
Challenge-led social-science and health doctoral competition with internal interview and nomination before the final DTP submission.
Arts and humanities doctoral awards combining research, a career-enhancing placement and possible additional skills training.
Broad funded-project competition across Ulster faculties, with applicants selecting a project through the PhD Finder.
Develop semantic-aware caching and delivery methods for immersive media with NexCache and Essex networking laboratories.
Open-topic ESRC route spanning medieval to modern economic and social history, including migration, gender, business, environment, war, memory and digital or oral history.
Builds coupled hydrodynamic, structural and turbine-load models for flexible floating tidal-energy platforms.
Studies how environmental exposures at mucosal barriers alter immunity and drive chronic inflammatory disease using computational and experimental methods.
Develops and analyses lattice hard problems, cryptanalysis and lattice-based post-quantum or privacy-preserving primitives.
Combines multiscale computation and experiments to predict elastomer degradation under extreme thermomechanical loading, with Michelin.
Cross-disciplinary full scholarship for applicants from the Americas proposing supervisor-supported doctoral research at Bath.
Cohort doctoral training combining AI with design, society, law and governance across public-interest challenges.
Combines bioleaching, metabolic engineering and life-cycle assessment to recover rare-earth elements from secondary resources.
Compare Like With Like
Use a planning table that separates stipend from salary, funding duration from contract duration, and study costs from employment costs. Include whether the figure is a fixed amount, a range or a rate for a stated year. A postdoc salary range does not tell you the eventual appointment point, and a published studentship rate does not establish future annual amounts.
Read the Work Behind the Payment
A PhD centres on doctoral research and progression towards the qualification. A postdoc advert describes the contribution expected to an existing research programme. Ask about supervision or line management, deliverables, publication expectations and opportunities to develop your own work. Consider what happens at the end of the funding or contract, especially if the project timetable differs from your intended career timetable.
Is a UKRI stipend a salary?
UKRI studentship guidance treats paid work as separate from the studentship and says its training-grant funds cannot be used to employ the student. Read your studentship terms for your status and responsibilities. Do not assume employment benefits or deductions from an annual stipend figure.
What should I read in a postdoc advert?
Look for salary, contract length, working hours, essential criteria and duties. The Oxford postdoctoral example gives a salary range and a fixed contract end, while requiring a relevant doctorate or near completion and specified research experience. A job title alone does not establish the conditions of another post.
Can I compare the annual amounts directly?
Begin with the different costs and time periods. A studentship may include tuition support, whereas a salaried job is an employment offer. Compare the actual payment terms and your expected budget, and check relevant payroll or award information rather than drawing a take-home-income conclusion from the headline figures.
Plan Your Application
Our research guide explains the decisions and links to official university and government guidance. Applications and funding decisions are handled by the offering institution.
Your Next-Step Checklist
- Identify whether the offer is postgraduate support or employment.
- Read payment, duration, duties and any excluded costs together.
- Compare your realistic budget and next career step, not just the annual headline.
