Build a Budget for Self-Funded Research

Compare the full cost of the research period with funding you have actually secured. A budget should make timing, assumptions and gaps visible before you commit.

Separate the Cost Categories

List tuition, living costs, travel, equipment, research expenses and any relocation costs that apply. Ask the department whether a training support or bench fee is charged: Bath’s psychology programme explains that some projects require one in addition to tuition. Use the university’s fee information for your course, applicant group and entry year.

Separate Confirmed Support From Possibilities

Create one column for secured resources and another for applications or expected support. An application to a scholarship is not yet money available to spend. Compare when bills fall due with when funds arrive, and identify the months where a gap appears. Update the figures when you receive a formal fee assessment or award notice.

Test Three Scenarios

Make a base case, a higher-cost case and a delayed-funding case. In each, write down the assumption that changed and the resulting shortfall. This is a planning exercise, not a prediction. Take unresolved programme costs to the university before deciding, and use its funding advice to investigate alternatives without assuming that future support will be awarded.

Your Next-Step Checklist

  • Obtain the course-specific tuition and research-cost information.
  • Distinguish secured funding from applications still pending.
  • Check payment timing and test a higher-cost scenario.
